Now that you know where to place the focus of the painting, how do you decide what the focal point should be? The focal point can be a pop of color, an interesting view, where the eye is naturally drawn in the image, or a piece of fascinating floral anatomy. Look at the photo in Figure 1, for example.
The most interesting part of the photo is the pop of color of the yellow flowers. In that area, there are flowers in multiple stages of opening with interesting contrasting colors and textures. Thus, the painting can be composed in such a way as to capture all of this variety in one frame (Figure 2).
