Once you compose the scene and frame the focal point, it’s time to notice the little things. Where is the light hitting the plant, and where are the deepest shadows? Noticing light and shadow is what gives a painting depth (Video 1). Without these elements, the painting will ultimately be flat. The more you can pinpoint and represent highlights, direct light, reflected light, core shadows, and cast shadows, the more realistic your paintings will become.
